{"id":458,"date":"2013-03-14T15:29:19","date_gmt":"2013-03-14T15:29:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.propertiesincostarica.com\/blog\/?p=458"},"modified":"2013-03-14T15:29:19","modified_gmt":"2013-03-14T15:29:19","slug":"costa-rica-local-workers-and-their-benefits","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.propertiesincostarica.com\/blog\/costa-rica-local-workers-and-their-benefits\/","title":{"rendered":"Costa Rica Local Workers and Their Benefits"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\">Labor in Costa Rica is very affordable compared to the U.S., Canada, or Europe and many ex-pats employ a full or part time gardener and house cleaner. \u00a0Since the jungle grows so fast around here, a gardener can keep the property and the landscaping maintained. \u00a0Same for a finished home, having some help cleaning windows, sweeping, mopping, and more helps maintain its beauty. \u00a0After all most people <a href=\"http:\/\/www.propertiesincostarica.com\/properties\/dominical_real_estate_for_sale.html\" target=\"_blank\">move to Costa Rica to relax<\/a>, not do house and yard work.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The salary of a full time worker is modest and about $100 to $150 per week depending on how long they have worked for you. \u00a0If you are paying minimum wage, then there is a mandatory increase every 6 months. If you are paying above minimum wage, then you can give raises when you please. \u00a0Most all Costa Ricans are very hard and honest workers and although there can be a bad apple from time to time, my experiences have been mostly positive.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The employer is required to pay the equivalent of social security and health insurance to the \u201cCaja Costariccencse de Seguro Social\u201d or commonly called the \u201cCaja\u201d. \u00a0\u00a0This is every month and for a full time minimum wage employee runs about $130 per month. \u00a0Even part time employees should be covered, but for a pro-rated the monthly fee. \u00a0\u00a0The \u201cCaja\u201d gives each \u201cpatron\u201d or boss a slip of paper each month to give their employees. \u00a0This paper is what they would take to the hospital if they get sick or anyone in their family gets sick, and provides proof of insurance.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">All employees should also have the equivalent of Worker\u2019s Compensation Insurance through \u201cInstituto Nacional de Seguros\u201d or \u201cI.N.S.\u201d \u00a0A worker\u2019s comp policy is about $120 to $200 per year depending on the type of work and hours performed. \u00a0\u00a0This covers any injury incurred while on the job and will pay their salary if they are incapacitated for an extended period of time.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Another option if you only need a part time employee and hire a \u2018contract worker\u2019 and they will be responsible for their own private insurance and worker\u2019s comp policy. \u00a0The salary can be per day and slightly higher to cover this added expense for the worker.
