Halloween, the Pura Vida Way

If you picture Halloween as cold nights, falling leaves and pumpkins on every porch, Costa Rica will surprise you. Here, October 31 often comes with warm evenings, ocean breezes and costumes worn barefoot on the sand.

Halloween is not a traditional Costa Rican holiday, but it has become more popular every year, especially in beach towns and international communities. What makes the season truly special, though, is that it falls on a date Ticos already celebrate in their own colorful way.

October 31 Is Also Día de la Mascarada

In Costa Rica, October 31 is the Día de la Mascarada Tradicional Costarricense, a celebration of the country’s giant handmade masks. Instead of witches and ghosts, you will see towering figures like La Giganta, El Diablo, La Muerte and La Vieja del Trapito dancing through the streets.

The tradition has deep roots. Indigenous peoples used masks of clay, stone, jade and wood in ceremonies, and Spanish customs later blended in. In Cartago in 1824, artisan Rafael “Lito” Valerín made the first Giganta, which many consider the start of the Costa Rican mascarada. Today it is recognized as part of the country’s intangible cultural heritage.

The masks dance to the music of the cimarrona, a lively local band of brass and drums. Towns like Barva, Escazú, Aserrí, Sarchí, Cartago and Desamparados are known for their mascarada festivities.

Just two days later, on November 2, many families observe the Día de los Difuntos (All Souls’ Day), visiting cemeteries to bring flowers and remember loved ones. It is a quiet, meaningful day, quite different from the fun of the mascaradas.

Where to Celebrate

Central Valley towns. For the most authentic experience, head to a traditional mascarada in Barva, Escazú or Cartago. Families line the streets, children run from the masked characters, and the cimarrona keeps everyone dancing.

Beach towns. Tamarindo, Jacó, Santa Teresa and Puerto Viejo, with their large expat and visitor communities, often host costume parties at local bars, restaurants and beach clubs. Expect creative costumes, live music and a relaxed, friendly crowd.

San José and Escazú. Shopping centers, hotels and international schools in the metro area often organize trick or treating and family friendly costume events.

Check local social media pages or ask your hotel or neighbors for this year’s events, since dates and venues change every year.

Tips for Families and Visitors

Dress for the tropics. Choose light, breathable costumes. Masks and heavy fabrics get hot fast, especially on the coast.

Plan for rain. Late October is still rainy season, so bring a light poncho or umbrella for evening events.

Trick or treating is not door to door everywhere. In most neighborhoods it is not a tradition, so look for organized events at malls, schools, hotels or gated communities.

Bring repellent. Evening events outdoors mean mosquitoes, so pack insect repellent along with the candy.

Respect the traditions. The mascaradas are cultural heritage. Enjoy them, take photos, and let the masked dancers chase you. That is half the fun.

Get around safely. If you go out to parties, use an official taxi or a ride app, and plan your ride home in advance.

Celebrate Every Season in Costa Rica

Whether you prefer giant masks in a Central Valley plaza or a costume party by the ocean, Halloween in Costa Rica is a great example of how local traditions and international culture come together. It is one more reason so many people choose to make Costa Rica their home.
